THE HISTORY OF GLENS IN IRELAND
Glen originates from the Irish County Wicklow’s Gle of Imaal.
The Glen of Imaal was inhabited by British soldiers who got a small
piece of land as a reward after they had won a war. Earning a living
was hard since the Glen of Imaal is very barren. Because of this the
soldiers dogs had to be very strong. The Glen took care of the family’s
children and it was used in hunting too. Whenever a Glen caught a quarry
it took care of the grilling as well.
Master could also have taken the Glen to a dogfight in spare time.
It was just one way to get more money for the family since the Glen
won easily. The Glen also took care of the house and yard by keeping
sabouters and thieves away.
However the most important usage of Glens was hunting. Glen has a
very interesting way to hunt foxes, badgers and alike. It follows the
quarry to its hole and starts to dig his way to the quarry. This is
why Glen has crooked front paws. When he catches the quarry, he silently
kills it and brings it to his master. Working dogs have to be strong,
their ears and eyes are small, they have good movement and they are
hardy. Only a Glen can be described so.
Because of the Irish blood a Glen is frisky gay and persistent Terrier.
Nowadays it’s mainly a companion dog but in no way should you
expect for it to be a couch potato! Glen is an active dog and loves
all kind of activities.

Glens in Shows
Even though Glens are not so easily thought of as show dogs, the Finnish
Glens are active show goers in Finland and abroad. In Obedience there
are dogs who compete in Open class and in Winner class. In Agility we
have dogs already in Mini2. Many of our dogs have been tested for character
with good results. |
